There are different mechanisms available to put in practice the technology transfer process from the University to the business sector as the most common ones are the license and the sales agreement.
License agreementThis is the most common technology transfer agreement. Under this type of agreement the licensing party transfers the to the licensee the right to use and make use of a certain technology – maintaining the industrial property rights on it – in exchange to fixed and/or variable payments depending on sales, milestones etc.)
In case of multiple application technologies, a limited license, one that only allows a determined application, could be granted. The license agreement might also impose limits in terms of time and territory. It offers the possibility of a single, unique licensee or multiple licensees agreement.
Assignment agreementIn contrast with the license agreements here industrial property rights are also transferred.
These are normally sales agreements signed when the technology in question has little relation to researchers/inventors research pipeline or when development costs are excessively high.
